The five questions we answer first

  1. How do I find out what type of septic system I have?

  2. What should an inspection or pumping visit include?

  3. Which records should I keep after septic service?

  4. What changes in water use could affect the system?

  5. Where do I check local permits before repair or replacement?

How ranking works

  1. Experience20

Years licensed or years registered with the state, whichever is longer.

  2. Insured20

Insurance on file with the state board that hasn't lapsed.

  3. Clean record20

    No board discipline on file.

  4. Recent work20

City permits pulled in the last 12 months.

  5. Rating20

Public ratings, pulled toward the average when there are few. Shown only as “Highly rated”.

  6. Points100

Each signal is compared with the other companies on the same list. A company the data doesn't cover gets the list's middle score for that signal: never zero, and never the highest. When no company on a list has a signal, it's left out and the others share the 100 points.
